The Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers are located within Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, 31 miles northwest of Puerto Natales, and form part of the Andes mountain range. Visiting them means admiring a majestic place, almost untouched by humans. Access is only by sea, sailing through the Última Esperanza Fjord, named for the “last hope” of finding the Strait of Magellan in 1557 by an expedition approaching from the Pacific Ocean.
The journey begins at the Puerto Natales pier. Along the way, you will see buildings belonging to the historic Bories cold-storage plant, once one of Patagonia’s largest meat-processing industries. You may also observe a colony of Imperial Cormorants, a small sea lion colony, and a variety of native flora such as Coigüe, Canelo, Lenga, Ñire, Chilco, and Calafate, among others.
The Balmaceda Glacier can be viewed from the boat, while visiting the Serrano Glacier requires a 20-minute walk along a trail bordering a small lake formed by the glacier’s meltwater.

Before entering the park, you will stop at a viewpoint offering the first panoramic views of the glacier’s southern wall. After entering, you will continue for 40 km to the parking area, where the trail leading to the walkways begins. The visit to the walkways is self-guided until the scheduled meeting time.
